Theri grosses a huge 87 crores after it's first weekend worldwide. The movie became a record opener for actor Vijay and in some areas, a record for Tamil films. In Tamil Nadu, the film grossed a huge 37.5 crores after 4 days which is outstanding without a Chengalpet release that could have added 8 crores to it's home state total. The film has created a record in Chennai city grossing nearly 4 crores in it's weekend. Other big areas like Coimbatore set records as well. In Kerala, the movie held the second highest opening weekend for a Tamil film after Shankar's "I". The film grossed nearly 10 crores in Kerala during the weekend which is near actor Vijay's career record of 10.5 crores in the state. Karnataka set records for the actor as well with it's gross above 5 crores. Andhra/TG had a decent opening for a Vijay film but failed to create any records for the actor. Overseas the film was grand grossing 30 crores in it's opening weekend, a record for the actor once again and one of the best openings in Kollywood. Malaysia witnessed an average opening surprisingly mostly due to the fact it wasn't a festive release. It still was expected to gross more than 5 crores in it's weekend. Other territories on the other hand were marvelous with the film nearing the $1 million mark in North America. In the UK, Theri set the record for the highest opening weekend for a Tamil film crossing Rajini's Enthiran. Theri did great business in Australia as well outperforming Sharukh Khan's film "Fan". A big deal this is to outperform a big budgeted Hindi film. Singapore and Sri Lanka were all similar as well grossing huge numbers in a short number of time. The film is already declared a huge success in France and other parts of Europe as well. Most territories will be career highs for Vijay despite the mixed reviews the film has received. Overseas looks like a guarantee success and so does Kerala, Karnataka, and the rest of India. Tamil Nadu looks a bit risky but still has the chance to become a profitable venture. Whether or not the mixed reception will affect the film in these territories will be seen next week.
